A highly respected speaker at a gathering of like-minded spiritual aspirants said that humans really only see a small “postage stamp” view of God’s vast canvas of creation.
Six Blind Brothers and an Elephant
Along time ago in India, six young brothers who were blind since birth were given the task of washing their father’s elephant for the very first time.
The first one was washing the tail; he concluded that the elephant was like a rope. The second one was washing the legs; the elephant to him was like four pillars.
The third one was washing the ears. He said, “You are both wrong. The elephant is like two fans that swing back and forth.” The fourth one was washing the elephant’s side and said, “No! It’s like a vast wall.”
The fifth one had been washing the elephant tusks. He was convinced that the elephant was just a couple of sharp bones. The sixth one was washing the trunk and he said, “I must tell you that all of you are wrong. The elephant is like a heavy snake.”
Their father heard them arguing and came to find out what was going on. Each boy was sure they knew the truth as to what the elephant was like. After explaining each of their positions, they appealed to him, “Which of us is right?”
The father said, “Well, my dear sons, you are all right, and yet you are all wrong. The elephant is like not one, but all these various things you have described. You have not taken into consideration that each one is only a part of the whole elephant.”
What do you think is the moral of this story?
AFFIRMATION
I am made in God’s image and likeness.
I am a perfect part of His perfect, universal plan.
I am made in God’s image and likeness.
I am created in His perfection.
Ukrainian folklore characterizes pysanky as a symbolic, talismanic writing that invokes a higher Universal Power for help, while believing with faithful certainty that It will. The contemporary version of this characterization is a paper-and-pen journaling practice called prayer writing that develops a personal relationship with God.
