Eye of the Needle

Every so often, God sends one of His archangels back to earth to account for those who are truly seeking Him. This time, it was Narada who was the special emissary chosen to search India for these Truth seekers.

And so it was that Narada found himself walking through a dense forest in northern India. There he came upon an old hermit doing all sorts of strenuous body positions. Narada introduced himself and told the hermit that he was sent by God to seek out His devotees.

"Surely, you are beholding the greatest devotee of the Lord on earth," the hermit said, "as I have been practicing every mental and physical self-discipline for nearly eighty years, just to find merit in God's eyes."

Impressed, Narada praised the hermit's persistence. But the hermit became angry, insisting that Narada promise to ask God why He had not responded with favor to any of his disciplinary exercises. After agreeing, Narada continued on his way. He exited the forest onto a road by a field and soon came upon another interesting situation.

A very drunk but determined young man was trying to set posts in the ground in order to build a fence. But he couldn't get the post into the hole. Narada heard the young man call out: "You unfeeling, lazy God, what a friend You are! Come here right now and help me with this post." Stunned, Narada asked if he could help.

Startled, the young man replied, "No. Not you. I will accept help only from my Divine Friend, who is hiding in the clouds trying to evade working with me." Narada asked the drunken man if he was afraid of cursing God in such a manner? But the young man replied: "Oh, no, He understands me better than anyone. Who are you, anyway?"

Narada said that he was a messenger of the Divine searching for His true devotees on earth. The young man eagerly responded: "Please, put in a good word for me when you see my Divine Friend. And ask Him why He is delaying His visit to me, as I have been waiting and waiting and always expecting Him."

Thinking that this man had very little chance of meeting the Lord, Narada reluctantly agreed and continued on his way. After meeting many others, he returned to heaven, to the warm glow of God's divine love. The Lord welcomed Narada back and inquired about his earthly excursions.

When Narada told God about the old hermit, God thought long and hard but could not remember him at all. Narada was surprised. He hesitantly began telling God about the drunken man, when God interrupted, "I do remember him." Narada was even more surprised. God said, "I shall prove to you which of these two men is My true devotee. Go back to earth and tell the old hermit that I will visit him as soon as I get done passing millions of elephants through the eye of a needle. Then tell the same to the drunken man. When you see their reactions, you will understand."

Back on earth, Narada found himself again with the old hermit who looked at him expectantly. But the odd message caused the hermit to fly into a rage, and he shouted: "Who ever heard of anyone trying to pass elephants through the eye of a needle. I wasted my life trying to please a crazy, nonexistent God!" Narada, stunned by the hermit’s reaction, quietly left to find the drunken man.

The young man, seemingly more drunk than before, was still trying to put fence posts in the holes by the side of the road. Upon seeing Narada, he cried out, "What is my Friend's reply? What is His answer? When is He coming?"

When he heard the Lord's message, his earthly intoxication vanished. Divine Intoxication took hold. He began dancing in joy, singing, "He who can send worlds through the eye of a needle in an instant, has already finished passing all those elephants through the eye of the needle."

The young man's divine intoxication so overwhelmed Narada that he too found himself dancing, feeling the ever-new joy of God’s presence, right there with them!

Peace Affirming Prayer

Peace fills my mind and flows through all my thoughts.

Peace fills my heart and flows through all my love.

Peace fills my soul and goodwill flows to all.

Peace fills my being and permeates all my activities.

Peace within. Peace without. Peace everywhere.

Peace in my mind. Peace in my heart. Peace in my soul.

Peace in me. Peace in my home. Peace in my country. Peace in my world.

Peace everywhere.

Amen.

Ukrainian folklore characterizes pysanky as a symbolic, talismanic writing that invokes a higher Universal Power for help, while believing with faithful certainty that It will. The contemporary version of this characterization is a paper-and-pen journaling practice called prayer writing that develops a personal relationship with God.
